Wall Insulation
Did you know that if your house was built prior to 1970, there’s a chance your walls were never insulated? Wall insulation didn’t become a standard building practice until the latter half of the 1900s, leaving many older homes without enough insulation.
If you’ve been noticing cold spots throughout your home, it might be time to add insulation to your walls. One of the most effective ways to insulate empty existing walls is by dense packing cellulose insulation into the empty cavities. Dense packing allows you to install wall insulation without tearing down drywall or causing too much disturbance to finished areas of your home.
Dense Pack Cellulose Insulation for Existing Walls
Cellulose is a type of insulation that offers exceptional benefits and is ideal for finished walls. It is made from recycled materials and specially treated with Borate to improve its safety ratings and durability. Cellulose is:
Eco-friendly, recycled insulation
Flame-retardant insulation
Pest-repellent insulation
Soundproof wall insulation
How Dense Pack Insulation Works
Dense packing is an insulation installation method that involves “blowing” insulation into empty wall cavities at a high pressure (around 3.6 psi). This method packs the insulation in densely (hence the name, dense-packing), filling the empty wall cavities completely.
One of the main benefits of dense pack insulation is that it can be installed without tearing down your walls! Depending on your house’s construction and facade, dense packing can be done from either inside or outside of the house. If you have vinyl siding, we simply remove a strip of siding, drill holes to access each cavity, dense pack, plug the holes, then re-install the siding. In other scenarios, we drill small holes into your walls from the interior and use an insulation hose to blow the material into the walls. Then, we close up the holes.
Why Insulate Existing Walls?
According to the Department of Energy, a home’s outer walls can be responsible for up to 35% of heat loss! Insulation is the key to keeping your home comfortable and your energy bills in check. It works by slowing down the transfer of heat into and out of your home, resulting in a number of benefits, including:
Keeping your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer
Prevention of cold indoor drafts
Improved energy efficiency
Reduced energy costs
Improved sound attenuation from outside traffic and noise
For home insulation and air sealing to be as effective as possible, it needs to be installed in three key areas: the attic, the basement or crawlspace, and exterior walls. If your home is missing wall insulation, you are missing out on energy savings and comfort.
